Position Description

Travel Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Summary

The Travel Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, compassionate care to oncology patients while on temporary assignment. This role delivers patient care using the nursing process within the framework of the Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and Scope & Standards of Practice. The Travel Oncology RN demonstrates clinical leadership, collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, and supports optimal patient outcomes while adapting quickly to new environments and workflows.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to oncology patients, including those receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and supportive treatments
  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
  • Safely administers antineoplastic medications in accordance with established protocols and standards
  • Monitors patients for treatment response, adverse reactions, and complications, intervening as appropriate
  • Educates patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, medications, and symptom management
  • Collaborates with physicians, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary care teams to coordinate care
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in accordance with facility policies
  • Adapts practice to diverse patient populations, demonstrating cultural sensitivity, respect for privacy, and clear communication
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education

  • Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Experience

  • Required: Minimum of two (2) years of recent Oncology RN experience
  • Preferred: Prior travel nursing experience

Licensure & Certifications

Required:

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of assignment (or compact license where applicable)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)- American Heart Association

Preferred:

  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®)
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

  • Strong clinical knowledge in oncology nursing and symptom management
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work independently in fast-paced and unfamiliar environments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • Flexibility and adaptability to varying facility policies and workflows

Physical & Environmental Demands

  • Heavy Work: Ability to exert 50-100 lbs occasionally, 25-50 lbs frequently, and 10-20 lbs constantly
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, and patient handling
  • Routine exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, chemotherapy agents, and communicable diseases
  • Potential exposure to hazardous medications and hazardous waste within the healthcare environment
